You got a secret bonus point………..I cannot believe it!
Retro Review: Dynamite Headdy (Genesis, Virtual Console) Dynamite_Headdy_Coverart
Dynamite Headdy looks like a puppet from Jim Henson's Fraggle Rock, but really, Dynamite Headdy is a platformer that sorta plays like Ristar (and they both have similarities with each other) and was developed by treasure, known for such classics as Gunstar heroes, Sin and Punishment and McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure. When it was originally released for the genesis, it wasn't a hit, just like Ristar, but just because nobody saw this puppet show, doesn't mean that it was a terrible………..it was awesome.

Plot:
Headdy, the central protagonist of the game, arrives in North Town to find that the evil puppet King Dark Demon is in the midst of attacking the puppet town to select which of the peaceful toys should live and which should be converted into his evil minions. Headdy is captured and rejected by D.D.'s forces, and is dropped into the dust cargo to be thrown into the incinerator. However, Headdy escapes the clutches of Dark Demon's minions and sets off to defeat the evil king.

Gameplay:
Dynamite Headdy is a platformer where Headdy must use his head to save the Northtown puppets from Dark Demon. Headdy can fire his head in eight different directions to do many things, such as battle enemies and reach new heights. Headdy can get new powers that will also change his head by hitting a walking case named Headcase, Headcase will display different powers and abilities and when Heady hits Headcase while he’s displaying that head, then Headdy will gain a power for a short time. Some powers Headdy can get increase his strength and fire stars at enemies, while some others protect him from attacks or make him go to sleep, which heals Headdy. One head in particular gives Headdy a liberty head, which transport him to the special stage, where Headdy must hit basketballs into hoops while not blowing up the hoops with bombs, if Headdy can get enough shots in the special stage, and then you’ll get part of a code, which can be used at the end of the game.

Levels:
There are 9 levels in Dynamite Headdy, with each stage having 3 acts (sometimes 4 acts) in them and a boss fight at the end. Along the way, you’ll encounter Trouble Bruin, A puppet cat/bear who will try and stop you in many different machine forms, he acts as a mid-boss in act 2, before you fight the boss. One level is not played as a platformer, but instead is a side-scrolling shooter, where Headdy can get exclusive power ups in the acts of these stages.

Control:
Dyanmite Headdy controls great, especially when the action starts. To make Headdy shoot his head, aim the d-pad/analog stick in that direction and press the attack button to fire Headdy’s head, Headdy can also fire his head while jumping by pressing the jump button. If you make Headdy get a power up that you didn't want, press the cancel head button and Headdy will return to normal. The controls can be changed in the options.

Graphics:
Everything in the game is just so colorful, which really sets the mood depending on the setting of the levels.There’s so much detail in the backgrounds, and even when they start to change and move very fast, everything looks great and detailed. Some of the levels and bosses give the illusion that it’s in 3D, which is something really nice and looks great.
Retro Review: Dynamite Headdy (Genesis, Virtual Console) Dynamite-11
Sound:
The soundtrack in this game is great. There’s a plenty of music which really set the mood, especially the boss fights. Headdy and some of the other puppets talk, Headdy says things depending on what’s happening to him.
Retro Review: Dynamite Headdy (Genesis, Virtual Console) Dynamite-15
Difficulty:
Dynamite Headdy is not an easy game, it is really challenging. You start off with only a couple of lives and no continues, to get extra lives, you must find 1-ups across the levels, and to gain continues, you must beat a boss, and while they are exploding, there will be exploding objects coming from them that will be exiting the scene, you must collect enough to gain a continue. Headdy has a health bar that’s represented by a stage light with a H on it and is lighted green, but when Headdy is damaged, the H will shrink and will become Red, once it’s red, another hit and Headdy will explode. There is no difficulty setting, however, if you want the game to be easier, then play the Japanese version, where enemies take less hits and you start off with continues.

Replayability:
Dynamite Headdy is a game that you will come back to, either because you want to play it again or because you want to beat it, it’s challenging, but it’s not impossible. Another reason to play it again is to access the secret level at the end, which can only be entered if you enter the code, which you get by playing all of the bonus games, the code will be different each time, so you must play the bonus games to get the right code.
Retro Review: Dynamite Headdy (Genesis, Virtual Console) Dynamite-8
Overall:
Dynamite Headdy is an excellent game and it’s an underrated treasure, even though it’s challenging, it’s still alot of fun. If you’re familiar with Ristar, but wish the game could be harder and more challenging, then this game is for you. Unlike Ristar, Dynamite Headdy has barley been released. It’s been added to the Wii’s virtual console and is a part of Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection/Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection for the Xbox 360 and PS3.
9/10

Dynamite Headdy reminds me so much of Ristar, I wonder why? Razz

Just curious, how did you find this game? I've never even heard of it.

@Clay Thanks Very Happy

I first heard about this game many years ago, when people were comparing Dynamite Headdy to Ristar, since both of them use a body part to fight enemies, collect items and power up, and both never got sequels after the Genesis (Also, there both yellow). This game is on the virtual console for 800 points, as well on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for Xbox 360 and PS3.

@Happy Mask Thanks Very Happy

I could do that if I wanted too, but that won't happen for a while, I should continue improving my review for now, but who knows, maybe one day i'll be reviewing the next thing................that's next, though I have been considering doing a video review in the style of AVGN, so who knows? thinking
