Mega Man 6 Review (NES) Mmbox6

When the Super Nintendo released in 1991, most developers said their farewells to the NES and moved on. However, Capcom decided Mega Man should stick around on the 8-bit system a bit longer and 1992 saw the release of Mega Man 5. Soon after this we saw the evolution of the Mega Man series in Mega Man X, so who would have thought that a year after that revolutionary title we'd be going back to the NES once again for Mega Man 6? It's time to see if Mega Man goes out with a bang or a whimper.

Our story starts out with the introduction of the first annual "Robot Masters Tournament" where robots from all over the world compete to see who is the best. The tournament is hosted by a myserious man named Mr. X, (not suspicious at all), who reveals that he has reprogrammed the final eight robot masters in the tournament to guess what, take over the world. In addition to this, he claims that he has been controlling Dr. Wily from the very beginning, and challenges Mega Man to stop him.

Even with all the additions and changes over the years, the core gameplay of Mega Man has remained the same and Mega Man 6 sticks to the formula that proved so successful. Mega Man is still equipped with the all powerful Mega Buster, you can still slide and take the weapons of the defeated robot masters. So if all the core mechanics haven't changed, what has? The largest change is with Mega Man's canine companion Rush. In previous games Rush could transform into various forms like Rush Coil or Rush Jet to help you traverse tricky situations. In Mega Man 6 Rush instead combines with Mega Man to give him two new forms, Power Mega Man and Jet Mega Man. Each acts like you would think, Power Mega Man gives you the ability to charge up a short-ranged but very powerful shot that can break blocks and defeat tougher enemies while Jet Mega Man gives you a jetpack. It's a great addition that changes up the gameplay just enough to keep things interesting. Aside from that, it's your standard Mega Man fare that you'd come to expect from the series.

Capcom has never faltered when it comes to delivering great visuals and music for Mega Man and this latest game is no exception. Being released so late in the NES lifespan, the graphics are absolutely top-notch. The amount of detail is fantastic and really brings the levels to life. The only fault in the visuals is the somewhat odd color palette in some levels. Going through a green and pink castle in Knight Man's stage is rather unusual, but it's not a huge problem. The audio is as incredible as ever though, and Capcom managed to deliver their strongest offering since Mega Man 3. Take a listen to some of my favorite songs:

Blizzard Man

Yamato Man

Tomohawk Man

Mr. X Stage

As neat as the new forms for Mega Man are, they come with their share of problems. Aside from breaking through blocks, Power Mega Man just isn't that useful. On the opposite side of the spectrum is Jet Mega Man. The ability to fly over pits and other death traps is exceedingly useful, so much so that you might play through most of the game with it. It's not so much of a game breaking problem, it just makes the game a whole lot easier. Mega Man 5 had a toned down difficulty because of the super powered Mega Buster and easier robot masters. Mega Man 6 has that in addition to Jet Mega Man, making it by far the easiest of the classic games. This might be welcome to some, or a turnoff depending on how much you like to be challenged. The game as a whole feels somewhat lifeless as well. There just isn't as much personality to it as the previous five games, and if you've already played through those, then the experience could very well begin to feel stale.

It was a risky move releasing a game on a console over two years after most of the world had moved on the the next generation. That being said, Mega Man 6 is no cheap cash-in. It has the same level of love and care poured into it as the rest of the series, and it keeps all the things that made Mega Man a success. Aside from a few balancing issues and strange color palette choices, there isn't much to complain about. While it is a technically great game, it is also the sixth in the series, and repetition has started to set in. All the problems aside, there's so much to enjoy here that it's well worth your time, just don't expect a groundbreaking experience.
