ATV Wild Ride 3D (3DS eShop)

A Wild Ride Indeed

ATV Wild Ride 3D is a remake of Renegade Kid's 2010 DS game ATV Wild Ride, but with added online, and a steal for eight dollars if you are into the racing genre.

ATV Wild Ride has the usual modes that a racer would, a Grand Prix, a Single Race mode, and Time Trials. There are six Grand Prix races, called Tours with each at a different difficultly, with four races apiece. These Tours range from Easy to Very Hard. The GP races usually are the traditional Exhibition, but there are two other types that pop up in the Tours, Freestyle and Elimination. Freestyle is a stunt race, which you have to get the most points to stay in first, and as the latter's name implies loser or in this case the guy in last gets eliminated each lap.
Single Race allows you to race on any of the 6 courses in Normal, Reverse(backwards), Extended or Extended Reverse, on Exhibition, Elimination, or Freestyle.
As for time trials, the title says it all, aim for the best time you can. You won't be using these much, unless you are set to get into the top of the online leaderboards, or need the practice. Once you beat the Grand Prix, you are given no reason to go back to single player, besides unlock two extra racers.

The gameplay itself is very smooth and solid, running at 60 frames per second, regardless of 3D. Thats right, 3D locked at 60 FPS. That stays true for the online races, which is very impressive for a DS port with online.
The online is a fun experience, allowing four racers to duke it out. The online leaderboards hold a stiff challenge, with this reviewer being currently 16th best in the world.
Unfortunately, the one of the most important parts of a racing game is broken, the boost system. You obtain boost by performing stunts in midair, done by thrusting the Circle Pad upwards, which doesn't sound too hard, but the combinations are.
There are 3 times of boosts, short, medium, and long, all performed by different button presses, any of the 8 directions L for short, 8 for R for medium, and 8 for L+R for long. In total, 24 combinations for boosting. Sadly, Renegade Kid added one part to the system that makes one want to chuck their 3DS into the nearest brick wall.
In a sentence, you can only perform a type of boost per lap. So after performing ↑ + L, you can't do that boost stunt for another lap. Sounds easy, remember what you have already used, and you will never run out of boosts. Well, to be truthful, you forget very fast what you have done. Your fingers instinctively go for the combos you have used the most, leaving you with no nitro. When you get fall in 4th (last) and get desperate, you will often perform those previously used stunts, getting you angrier, and performing worse.

Five of the six stages are wonderful, with Canada being a glitch filled disaster. It is an absolute disgrace to the game, with collision issues causing the glitches. You bump into one of the side rails like you do in every other course, but instead of "riding the wall" you get sent back to the middle of the road.
This reviewers thoughts as to why this only happens on the Canada course, is because of the walls. The course is filled with very short and thin walls, and with the tires occasionally will go through the walls, but the game will read it as you've gone offcourse, and re-postions you on the course. A patch will fix this, but as of right now, Canada is unplayable.

The graphics in the game are good for a updated DS game, and I personally find them good for a minor touch up. The music is garbage, only aggravating you more when you can't perform combo's and are glitching like no tomorrow on canada. Thankfully, you can turn off the music in the settings.

Lastly, there are a grand total of twelve racers, all of which don't change a thing, although there are some cool racer designs, such as one based off of Maxmillion from Mutant Mudds, and a racer inspired by Bomb Monkey. The ATV's however are different, each with different stats for different play styles, but that becomes unimportant when you unlock the one out of the four fully maxed out ATV's.

Overall, Renegade Kid made a pretty solid racer with ATV Wild Ride 3D. The framerate is locked in at 60FPS in 3D, a good online, and the gameplay is mostly solid. Sadly, the lack of good modes, and the glitch filled Canada course makes the experience shallow. If a patch came out for Canada, it would raise the score to an 8, but this game is how the game is currently programmed. But, the game is 8 dollars, less than 500 blocks, and a decent multiplayer experience, it is worth your money alone in the online play.

Overall 6.5/10

Hmm... won't pick this one up. I'd either get bored right away, or obsess until I was number one in the world. And glitchiness. D:

@Knuckles if the music is important to keep the mood, you may want to add a paragraph on that. :3

I meant separately from the graphics, and adding a bit more detail. :3 If it's anything like Crazy Bus... :O

The music is awful, I tried to enjoy it, I really did, but I couldn't. And thats coming from someone who liked the voices in Star Fox 64.
